O. Bernard Smalls

Visionary & Teacher

Bernard Smalls is an author and a transformational teacher in the Body of Christ. He has functioned as a corporate trainer in the business world and as a consulting resource with The Ken Blanchard Companies. He has a marketplace ministry with a focus on success motivation, leadership, sales, and service excellence from a Christian perspective.

Bernard founded and was pastor of Prevailing Word Outreach Church in Anchorage Alaska for 10 years. He is a student of the Bible and psychology and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. Bernard embraces a positive word of faith, success-motivation approach to ministry. His commission from God is eradicating poverty consciousness from the minds of His people, preparing the church for the Great Wealth Transfer.

In his professional endeavors, Bernard is known as the Guru Ho Guru, a leadership expert, customer service specialist, and culture strategist. Bernard Smalls has functioned as a corporate trainer in the business world and as a consulting resource with a focus on leadership, sales, and service excellence for over 30 years.

Before all of that, he was a professional drummer playing in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area. After a potentially lucrative deal with Motown fell through, he began to pursue spiritual development. Bernard holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Esoteric Theology and is the founder HuMax Consulting Group. Bernard brings timeless solutions to organizations through proven wisdom that produces the best results.

He is married to Karen Smalls, the wife of his youth for over 40 years. They have four wonderful children Travian, Terrence, Aaron, and Alexia.

Karen Smalls

Executive Director, Operations

Karen Smalls is result-oriented and committed to individual and group progress. She is an earnest advocate of personal confidence and growth and highly motivated to strengthen people one-by-one, making an entire group unstoppable. An insightful facilitator of positive change, Karen can be counted on to initiate action that brings about change. Known for her dramatic style, Karen is a persuasive communicator. She has a natural ability to analyze any situation to determine what is needed. As a trainer, she is capable of developing programs that effectively motivate people to meet those needs and reach a desired end. Her foresight, wisdom, and delivery leave a lasting mark wherever she goes.

One of her passions is enlarging the capacity of people to achieve their goals and live full lives. Those who attend her conferences and workshops or receive her coaching always leave with stronger relationships, increased self esteem, and energy to pursue their dreams. Karen replaces discouragement with hope and ambiguity with purpose, and she provides the tools for personal growth.

As the executive director of operations for Word Church Now, Karen is the senior operating officer of the organization working alongside her husband, Bernard, to a create a culture of growth and effectiveness. Her primary focus is leadership development–for which she carries a masters degree, managing administrative support, and oversight of all support functions.

She is the mother of Travian, Terrence, Aaron, and Alexia and Nana to soon-to-be five grandchildren. When she’s not building and developing and working on her doctoral thesis as a PhD candidate in the psychology of organizational behavior, she’s coloring and keeping everyone away from her perfectly sharpened deluxe box of Crayola crayons.

Gwen Witherspoon

Executive Director, Communications

Gwen Witherspoon is a coach, artist, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in design, marketing, branding, retail, coaching, management and development. She’s obsessed with art, technology, poetry, scale miniatures, design, and making a difference. She is the founder and principal of Adam Red, an Atlanta branding agency, and of Vivid Academy, Inc.–a nonprofit dedicated to teaching the art, science, and psychology of entrepreneurship.

A love of art, the need to create order, and a genuine belief that she can solve the identity crisis–whether for an individual or a company–has fueled her personal and professional life. She is known for making ideas happen because she has a knack for comprehensive, creative solutions.

As the executive director of communications for Word Church Now, she’s using all of that to help build communities of faith.

Gwen moved from Anchorage, Alaska with Bernard & Karen Smalls to start a church in Atlanta in 1995, and after decades in the suburbs, she now lives happily in the city with her husband Ron, and she’s the mother of a very handsome and talented son, Aaron and daughter-in-law Ashley, who have made her Gammy to Raelyn and Carter.
